Las Vegas Review
March 30, 2009 at 8:39 pm | Posted in Fun Indoors, Rants | Leave a commentIt’s been at least 7 years since I’ve been to Las Vegas, and it was a place of contrasts. The hotels were full, the casino was busy, and the streets were gridlocked – you’d think that we weren’t in a recession, but the acres and acres of empty houses south of the airport tell a different story, along with illegal aliens handing out adult calling cards to people of all ages on The Strip.
What bothered me about the growth of Las Vegas was how much public good was sacrificed for the sake of the corporate casinos. Even though the insides of the casinos / resorts are nice, trying to travel between them, or even getting around town convinced me that this city is unliveable. Public transportation is pathetic, traffic is terrible, pedestrian traffic is difficult, riding a bicycle around town would be suicidal, and the monorail is a classic case of special interest politics – it does not go to the airport nor is it located within a reasonable distance from most hotels. This city cannot complete in future of high fuel and water prices, low home prices, and even lower disposable income.
On the positive side, I got to see one of the last showings of the Folies Bergere; it closed last weekend after a 49-year run. I have never been to a Las Vegas show until last week, and it was a nice experience to see a classic show featuring showgirls and vaudeville acts. Still, I don’t think I will be going back anytime soon.

Laptop Desktop
January 10, 2009 at 1:49 am | Posted in Fun Indoors, Macintosh | Leave a commentI recently had some computer problems and am using a Macbook as my primary computer. This picture shows why I’m shopping for a desktop. My need for bandwidth, screen real estate, and storage cannot be met by a laptop.

Adios Jericho
March 29, 2008 at 10:29 pm | Posted in Fun Indoors | Leave a commentI was one of the many thousands of Jericho fans who lobbied to save the show from cancellation last year. However, I was unable to watch any of Season 2 until today when I finished all seven episodes in one sitting.
Although I wish that there would be a Season 3, CBS has cancelled Jericho and the finale brings closure to the show on a positive note – the corrupt Cheyenne government should fall and the United States restored. Any resemblance to the current political situation is purely coincidental
I’m looking forward to the DVDs.

Macworld Loot
January 19, 2008 at 11:19 pm | Posted in Fun Indoors, Macintosh | Leave a commentThe yearly exercise of Mac geekery and unbridled consumerism known as Macworld Expo has just concluded, and the damage as been limited to under $500
From left to right – EyeTV Hybrid, software, and freebie bag, iPod protective film and leather case, Speck swag, Kensington 3-in-1 cable, iPod touch, iFrogz Treadz case, and Leopard. Special thanks to the iFrogz representative on the show floor. I didn’t get his name, but he gave me a free Treadz case as the show booths were being taken down 15 minutes before closing time. It’s really a good case — I will probably get another one.

This isn’t cheap beer folks, it’s Gordon Biersch Märzen from a keg. I’m not that drunk — yet.
Hollywood 2.0
November 19, 2007 at 10:14 pm | Posted in Fun Indoors | Leave a commentI bought my first HDTV just in time for the writers strike to end the new TV season (I was so looking forward to another season of “24″). Marc Andressen speculates that an extended strike that involves the actors and directors may accelerate the transformation of Hollywood into a more decentralized and competitive market. The entertainment industry may leave California the same way aerospace left 15 years ago.
